Re: Legal Raw Milk In Wisconsin
Dear Rep. Ott:
Enclosed is a copy of a letter that I sent to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Editorial Board in response to their February 13, 2013 shoddy Opinion piece against raw milk. Hopefully, it will provide you with a spark of “Hey, there’s more behind this raw milk issue than what is opined!”
Last February 22, 2012, my husband and I attended the Raw Milk Lobby Day, sponsored by the Wisconsin Raw Milk Association at the State Capitol Building. We and others saw and heard you speak to a group of students in the Rotunda, and when you noticed nearby raw milk advocates, you took that opportunity to further perpetuate the erroneous and misleading information from the February 21, 2012 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study press release. Your erroneous information and ranting against raw milk was disappointing and gave a nasty and ineffective legislator impression to many in the Rotunda. I was embarrassed for you. Although you called it a “debate,” it was not a debate because the Capitol Police would not allow rebuttal of the misleading information.
Please take the time to Google my response letter’s listed enclosures. Use a raw milk search and add “cookies & doughnuts & cows” for the “Dairy and Health on the Farm Blog” and “Cheeseslave.” The “Food Safety News” has the “Nation’s Largest Raw Milk Dairy Sues FDA Over Interstate Ban” article.
I have enclosed a copy of Mark McAfee’s open letter to the CDC, which states important information he received from the CDC and includes data that “showed in fact there had been no deaths from raw milk at all.” The 2 deaths in the CDC’s data were from ”illegal Mexican bath tub cheese,” not raw milk from any place in America.
Luckily, the Editorial Board recently printed Coon Valley farmer Vince Hundt’s pro-raw milk opinion, and a copy is also enclosed for you.
I feel you owe Wisconsin’s small family organic raw milk farmers an apology, along with one to the visiting students and those attending/supporting Raw Milk Lobby Day at the Capitol last February.
In closing, I’d like to ask if you attended the Raw Milk Bill Hearing on March 10, 2010 in Eau Claire and heard our Wisconsin family small organic raw farmers’ testimonies, which included DATCP’s deceitful dealings. Are you aware of DATCP’s most recent legal actions against a Sauk County organic Amish farmer (Vernon Herschberger) and the rights of raw milk advocates via a farm co-op membership? Do you know that DATCP recently wasted taxpayers’ monies via Department of Justice filing a Motion to force news media/reporters to testify in the State of Wisconsin vs. Vernon Hershberger criminal case? The ruling judge denied the Motion. Are you aware that on May 19, 2010, Governor Doyle vetoed the Raw Milk Bill in its entirety, which would have provided regulated, safe and viable farm to consumer raw milk access?
Although you list your profession as a farmer, I conclude that you are unjustly biased with an underlying mission that fails all Wisconsin farmers, citizens, and consumers.
